This elegant and exciting course, surrounded by Black Pine Forest, can be played on green grass all year round.
We hope that all golfers, both from Japan and abroad, will be able to experience the history of golf in Japan and inherit the golfer's spirit.
Black Pine Forest is an essential part of the prestigious PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB Japan's pride and joy. The course has been challenged countless times by top golfers from around the world, and continues to evolve.
From 1969
Starting in Greenland
After the war, as the economy developed, the number of golf courses gradually increased, and in 1957, with the first live television broadcast in Japan, the sport of golf became widely known to the general public.
In the 1970s, as Japan entered a period of rapid economic growth, construction of large-scale resort complexes began here in Miyazaki. One of these was Phoenix Greenland (Phoenix General Leisure Center).
From 1974
Dunlop Phoenix Tournament
The first Dunlop Phoenix Tournament was held in 1974, when the golf boom was upon us and the number of professional golf tournaments in Japan exceeded 50.
Everyone in the golf world felt that internationalization was essential to further raising the level of golf in Japan. With the understanding and efforts of many people involved, Dunlop Phoenix Tournament was born.
This idea reached the king of golf, Jack Nicklaus, who, together with John Montgomerie, began to create a truly international tournament. This continues to this day, and has developed into a global tournament that brings together the world's top golfers every year.
Dunlop Phoenix Tournament of such a high level that it is said to be "a domestic tournament that feels like an overseas tournament."
The first Japanese player to break this barrier was Tsuneyuki Nakajima in 1985. Masashi Ozaki won three consecutive titles from 1994 to 1996, and in 2000, Shingo Katayama took the momentum from his title win and miraculously became the money leader.
In 2002, Yokoo Kaname beat Tiger Woods to win the tournament, and in 2005, although he lost, he competed in a playoff with Tiger, showing some performances that will go down in golf history.
Further evolution and the future of golf
PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB continues to evolve, not only by protecting Black Pine Forest but also by making improvements to the grass and bunkers. The greens are made of bentgrass, while the fairways and rough are made of Tifton in the summer and perennial ryegrass in the winter, allowing you to enjoy the feel of Western grass, which is rare in Japan.
In April 2014, PHOENIX SEAGAIA RESORT was designated as a "National Training Center Sports-Specific Training Base Facility (Golf)" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
This designation was given to the entire resort, and is testament to the high evaluation of not only the country's leading golf environment, which includes PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB and the Academy, but also the extensive training and accommodation facilities, as well as the environment of Miyazaki itself.
Kuromatsu Forest Declaration
The black pine forest on Hitotsuba Coast was planted 200 years ago to protect the livelihoods of local residents. Stretching 11km north to south and 1km wide, the more than 1 million pine trees not only protect against strong winds and tidal damage, but also bring us peace and healing. We will protect, nurture, and pass on this black pine forest to the next generation as an irreplaceable asset for Miyazaki Prefecture and Japan. We hereby declare that PHOENIX SEAGAIA RESORT will continue to be a resort that coexists with the black pine forest.
