Sumiyoshi Shrine
The original shrine of Sumiyoshi Shrines across the country
Sumiyoshi Shrine, adjacent to Miyazaki City Phoenix Zoo, enshrines the three gods (Uwatsutsuno-mikoto, Nakatsutsuno-mikoto, and Sokotsutsuno-mikoto) who were born when Izanagi-no-mikoto performed a purification ritual to purify himself of the impurities he had suffered in the underworld.
This ancient shrine has long been worshipped as the god of the sea and the god of safe navigation, and its crest, which features the character "moto" surrounded by a circle, is said to be the symbol of the original Sumiyoshi shrine, of which there are over 2,000 throughout the country.
