Awakihara Forest Park Citizens' Forest
A vast park where you can enjoy flowers of all seasons
Citizens' Forest is located in a corner of Awakihara Forest Park, which spreads across the Hitotsuba district, and is a vast park covering 29.3 hectares. It was developed as part of the Meiji 100th anniversary commemoration project and opened in October 1971.
The East Garden is surrounded by bright pine forests and evergreen broad-leaved forests, and is home to Oike Pond (also known as Misogi Pond), the setting of the myth, and Eda Shrine, located at the end of a promenade.The West Garden is home to plum, camellia, and iris gardens, where you can enjoy flowers of all seasons, and the Iris Festival, held every year from mid-May to early June, attracts many visitors from inside and outside the prefecture.
Late January to mid-February: Approximately 160 plum trees
Late May to mid-June: Approximately 200,000 Japanese irises
Early June to mid-June: Approximately 1,000 hydrangeas
Mid-January to March: Approximately 340 camellias

Misogi Pond is the place where Izanagi-no-Mikoto is said to have performed a purification ritual, and on the south side of the park is Eda Shrine, which is also mentioned in the Engishiki, a book written in the Heian period.
